August is Black Business Month and in honor of that, here are some ideas to help you celebrate and support Black-owned businesses.
Financial Support
Black-owned businesses, like all other businesses, need money to grow and thrive. However, unlike other businesses, they are less likely to be granted the type of financial support and exposure that their counterparts receive. You can help change that narrative by going out of your way to purchase from a Black business owner.
Spread The Word
Speaking of exposure, how often do you call up a friend to complain or vent about a negative shopping experience? We’ve all been there. There’s no shame in it. But, when was the last time you spread the word about a positive interaction? People are more likely to take the recommendation of a trusted friend or family member when deciding to make a purchase. So, if you’ve had a good experience with a Black-owned business, make sure others know about it!
Write Reviews & Share on Social Media
Because of the numerous online shopping platforms and social media sites we have access to, your positive words and recommendations can go a lot further than your inner circle. If you’ve enjoyed a product or service from a Black-owned business, please take the extra minute or two and write out a review for them online. It doesn’t have to be extremely long or detailed. Short, positive posts that show enthusiasm or appreciation for the business mean more than you know. A lack of reviews or ratings may make shoppers even more wary of trying out a product. Especially if they are considering purchasing from a Black-owned, small business instead of the large retailers they’re familiar with.
